The Music of the City
Having spent over a year getting to know the characters in KATHMANDU and the books that will follow, I feel like I now know them inside out.
One of the decisions writers must make though, is how much of this backstory do you tell the reader?
On one hand you want people to know the characters as well as you do, but on the other hand, you don’t want to slow down the pace of the story with lots of distracting information. It’s a constant balancing act that took me a long time to get right (and it was my first novel so maybe I didn't get it completely right).
In one of the earlier drafts of Kathmandu, there was a chapter about the background of Tau who (if you haven’t read the story yet) is one of the supporting characters. For me, it was important people knew who he was to understand his mixture of courage, confidence, humour and warm-hearted pride.
However, after a discussion with my editor, this chapter didn’t make the final cut. Not able to say goodbye to it completely though, I have re-written and re-edited it for you as a little extra.
If you’d like to know where Tau came from and what made him who he is, then I’d love you to read it.
I’ve called it ‘The Music of the City’, you’ll see why when you start reading.
