I visited Hong Kong in 2017 and was struck by the city’s extraordinary contrasts: luxury apartments beside working-class hostels, ancient traditions beside relentless modernisation, and hidden everyday lives tucked between glittering towers.

The building where Leo and Allissa stay — called Nathan Mansions in the book — is based on a real place above a shopping mall on Nathan Road in Kowloon. It felt like a wonderful microcosm of everyday Hong Kong life. The tension between wealthy developers and the ordinary residents they displace became the engine of the story. Later events in Hong Kong added even more real-world resonance, but at its heart, Hong Kong Gone is about the human stories hidden behind a city’s shining surface.
