Description

A missing fashion tycoon. Rival gangs at war. A city built on secrets.

When Leo and Allissa take what looks like a straightforward case, they’re pulled into the darkest corners of Berlin — from its underground techno clubs to the eerie ruins of Teufelsberg, an abandoned Cold War listening post looming over the city.

But someone will do anything to keep the truth buried.

With Berlin’s most dangerous man closing in, Leo and Allissa find themselves trapped in a deadly game of violence, betrayal, and shifting loyalties. And as the pressure mounts, the bond between them is pushed to breaking point.

Because this case is bigger than a disappearance.

It’s a secret people have killed to protect for decades — and if Leo and Allissa don’t uncover it in time, Berlin may bury them with it.

FAQ

What is Berlin Underground about?

Berlin Underground is a fast-paced missing person thriller and international detective novel set in Berlin, Germany. When British fashion designer Minty Rolleston vanishes, his brother hires Leo Keane and Allissa Stockwell to find him. Their search pulls them into Berlin’s underground world of nightclubs, fashion, organised crime, and Cold War secrets. What begins as a missing person investigation soon becomes a dangerous race through one of Europe’s most atmospheric cities.

Berlin Underground is an international detective thriller, a travel mystery, and a crime thriller set in Berlin. It combines a missing person investigation with Berlin nightlife, techno clubs, Russian gangsters, hidden deals, and Cold War thriller elements. Like the other International Detectives books, the city is not just the backdrop — Berlin shapes the story.

Berlin Underground is set mainly in Berlin, Germany. Key locations include the city’s nightclubs, railway stations, backstreets, creative districts, Kreuzberg, Warschauer Strasse, the River Spree, old industrial spaces, and Teufelsberg spy station.

I couldn’t write a Berlin thriller without including Teufelsberg. It’s one of the city’s most fascinating places: an abandoned Cold War spy station once used by American and British intelligence, sitting on top of Devil’s Mountain, a man-made hill built from the rubble of World War II. For readers looking for a Berlin mystery novel, a detective thriller set in Germany, or a travel mystery with a vivid urban setting, Berlin is at the heart of the book.

Berlin Underground was inspired by my love of Berlin, electronic music, and the city’s strange mix of history, creativity, nightlife, and secrets. The nightclub scenes draw on Berlin’s legendary music culture, from underground techno clubs to the long history of cabaret, punk, new wave, and electronic music. The climax was inspired by Teufelsberg, the abandoned Cold War spy station just outside the city, with its tattered radar domes, graffiti, and espionage atmosphere.

The International Detectives series begins with location. Each book takes Leo Keane and Allissa Stockwell somewhere new, and the place shapes the mystery as much as any clue or suspect. These are not traditional police procedurals. There are no forensics labs or routine interrogations at the centre of the books. Instead, Leo and Allissa are dropped into unfamiliar places, trying to find missing people in corners of the world most detective novels rarely visit.

Berlin Underground is for readers who enjoy fast-paced mystery thrillers, international detective fiction, travel mysteries, missing person stories, and crime thrillers with vivid locations. It should appeal to readers fascinated by Berlin, Berlin techno clubs, the Berlin nightclub scene, Cold War history, Teufelsberg, abandoned spy stations, organised crime, and character-driven mysteries with a strong sense of place.
Berlin Underground contains danger, tension, violence, and adult themes connected to crime and Berlin nightlife, but no gratuitous or graphic content. It’s perfect for readers looking for a clean thriller, a clean international detective novel, or a travel mystery without graphic content.
Berlin Underground and the Eden Black books both share my love of travel, vivid locations, and fast-moving adventure, but the tone is slightly different. Eden Black is a globe-trotting archaeological adventure series full of ancient mysteries, secret societies, and hidden relics. The International Detectives series is grittier, more personal, and more rooted in the real world.
Yes. While Berlin Underground is International Detectives is book three, after Kathmandu Killers and Hong Kong Gone, it works as a standalone missing person thriller because the central investigation is self-contained. However, the relationship between Leo Keane and Allissa Stockwell develops across the series, so starting with Kathmandu Killers gives the richest experience.
