What is New York Nightfall about?

New York Nightfall is a dark, atmospheric crime thriller and serial killer mystery set in New York City. Leo Keane and Allissa Stockwell are on what should be a straightforward surveillance job in St Lucia when they realise the man they’ve been watching is one of the most dangerous criminals they have ever encountered.

Getting off the island alive is only the beginning as in New York, a killer is working his way through the city — a man who believes he is continuing the work of his great-grandfather, one of history’s most notorious murder suspects.

Two investigations, one city, and a darkness that connects Victorian London, Jack the Ripper, and the streets of modern Manhattan.

New York Nightfall is a fast-paced crime thriller with a serial killer mystery at its heart. It is darker in tone than the earlier International Detectives books, and more personal. The story moves between St Lucia, the jazz clubs of Greenwich Village, and the rain-soaked streets of New York at night. It also marks a significant turning point in the relationship between Leo and Allissa. If the earlier books established what these two can do, New York Nightfall shows who they are to each other.
New York Nightfall opens in St Lucia in the Caribbean before moving to New York City, where most of the story takes place. Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan are central to the book, along with the city’s jazz clubs, rain-slicked streets, and the 9/11 Memorial. New York’s jazz history is woven throughout the story.

I visited New York in 2018 on the return leg of a trip to St Lucia, and it felt natural to share that journey with Leo and Allissa. I was struck by the city’s layers: the jazz history, the architecture, the energy at night, and the sense that every block has its own story.

The seed of the plot came from Francis Tumblety, an Irish-American quack doctor and con man who was in London during the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888. He was arrested, fled to France, and was never charged. He remains one of the more unusual and intriguing Ripper suspects in the historical record. Giving him a descendant who believes he is continuing the family legacy felt like a natural fit for New York’s darker side.

New York Nightfall is not a retelling of the Jack the Ripper murders, but it does draw on real Ripper history through Francis Tumblety, one of the more unusual historical suspects.

The book uses that connection to create a modern serial killer thriller set in New York City, linking Victorian London with present-day Manhattan.

The International Detectives series begins with location. Each book takes Leo Keane and Allissa Stockwell somewhere new, and the place shapes the investigation as much as any clue or character. These are not traditional police procedurals. There are no forensics labs, police stations, or routine interrogations at the centre of the books. Instead, Leo and Allissa are two people who are very good at finding those who do not want to be found, dropped into corners of the world most detective novels rarely visit.

New York Nightfall is for readers who enjoy atmospheric crime thrillers, serial killer fiction, international detective novels, and mysteries with a strong sense of place. It should appeal to readers fascinated by New York City, Greenwich Village, jazz clubs, Jack the Ripper history, Francis Tumblety, Victorian London, and darker character-driven thrillers. It is also for readers who have followed Leo and Allissa from the beginning and have been waiting for the moment the series finally addresses what is between them.

Compared with the earlier books in the series, New York Nightfall is darker in tone — there is a serial killer at the heart of the story, and some of those scenes are genuinely unsettling. That said, the violence is never gratuitous or graphic, there is no profanity, and there are no sexual scenes.
New York Nightfall and the Eden Black books both share a love of vivid locations, but they feel very different in tone. Eden Black is a globe-trotting archaeological adventure series full of ancient mysteries, secret societies, and world-changing relics. New York Nightfall is grittier, more intimate, and considerably darker. Where Eden is often trying to save civilisation, Leo Keane and Allissa Stockwell are trying to stop one man from killing again.
New York Nightfall is book four in the International Detectives series, following Kathmandu Killers, Hong Kong Gone, and Berlin Underground. It works as a standalone crime thriller, but it is considerably richer when read in order.
