What is The Lotus Key about?

The Lotus Key opens in the Khmer Empire in 1218, as a trusted monk is given a desperate final mission by Prince Indravarman II: to smuggle the empire’s most powerful and dangerous relic — the Lotus Key — out of Angkor Wat and hide it where it can never be used again. The prince has seen what the relic does to those who wield it, and he wants no part of it. Sothea obeys, and the relic disappears into the depths of the Gulf of Thailand, lost to history.


Eight centuries later, Eden Black is on Koh Rong Island, Cambodia, when the Lotus Key resurfaces — and with it, a threat unlike anything she has faced before. The relic has the power to control millions of minds simultaneously, its promise of absolute peace coming at the cost of free will itself. Eden must race through the Cambodian jungle, across minefields left from decades of conflict, and deep into the mysteries of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the Khmer Empire to find the Lotus Key before it falls into the hands of those who want to use it to reshape the world.

The Lotus Key is an ancient Khmer relic of extraordinary and terrifying power — the ability to control millions of minds simultaneously, bending the will of entire populations to the wishes of whoever wields it. According to the legend embedded in Angkor Wat’s carvings, the Khmer king would visit a golden tower each night to commune with a spirit — the true source of the kingdom’s power. The Lotus Key was that source. Prince Indravarman II, unwilling to use it or allow anyone else to, had the relic removed from Angkor and deliberately sunk in the Gulf of Thailand in 1218 — until now.

Angkor Wat and the Khmer Empire are real, and the historical details woven through the book — the empire’s extraordinary scale, the carvings of the temples, the reign of Indravarman II and his erasure from the historical record — are grounded in genuine archaeology.

The Chinese diplomat Zhou Daguan, who visited Angkor in 1296 and documented the king’s nightly visits to a golden tower to commune with a spirit, was a real person whose account remains one of the most important records of Khmer life ever written.
The landmines that scar the Cambodian landscape and continue to kill and maim civilians are real — Cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, and the charities working to clear them are doing some of the most important humanitarian work in the region.

By book six, Eden is fully established as one of the most capable and driven characters in the series — but The Lotus Key tests her in new ways. The moral weight of what the Lotus Key represents forces her to confront questions that go beyond her usual mission. She also faces her most formidable adversary in some time: Mei-Ling Zhao, a ruthlessly skilled operative whose own race to find the Lotus Key takes her from the rooftops of Paris to Angkor Wat.
The Lotus Key is almost entirely set in and around Cambodia. It begins on Koh Rong Island — a beautiful, largely unspoiled island off the Cambodian coast — before moving to the jungles of the mainland, the ancient temple complexes of the Angkor region, and deep into the northwest of the country near the Thai border, where the densest concentration of unexploded landmines in the world still makes large stretches of land off-limits. Angkor Wat itself is a central and vivid presence throughout — its carvings, its mysteries, and the questions it raises about what the Khmer Empire truly knew form the backbone of the investigation.

The Lotus Key is an archaeological thriller set in Southeast Asia. It delivers Dan Brown’s blend of historical mystery and contemporary conspiracy, Clive Cussler’s globe-trotting action, and the adventure spirit of Indiana Jones, all in a setting made famous by Lara Croft and Tomb Raider. The 2001 film starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft is considered one of the first international productions to bring the wonders of Angkor Wat to a wide Western audience, filming across Ta Prohm, the Bayon Temple, Phnom Bakheng, and Angkor Wat itself. Ta Prohm is now so widely known as a filming location that it is referred to locally as the Tomb Raider Temple. The Lotus Key is set in those same extraordinary places — and goes considerably deeper into what lies beneath them.
